Transforming Public Relations:
Insights from Datuk Jake Abdullah
at WPRD 2024
Embrace Continuous Learning
In Session 6 of the 2024 WPRD Conference held at Menara BAC recently, the charismatic Datuk Jake Abdullah, Strategic Advisor for Media Prime Studio, shared key strategies for PR professionals to adapt and excel in the rapidly evolving industry.
Datuk Jake emphasised the critical importance of continuous learning in the field of PR. As the industry evolves with new technologies and platforms, staying updated is not just beneficial, but essential.
He encouraged PR professionals to actively seek out new knowledge, whether through formal education, workshops, or self-study. This approach helps in staying ahead of the curve and being prepared for any shifts in the industry.
Specialise, Excel and Engage
"Pick your poison," Datuk Jake advised, urging PR professionals to find their niche. Rather than trying to be a jack-of-all-trades, he recommended focusing on becoming exceptional in one specific area. This specialisation allows PR practitioners to develop deep expertise and stand out in their chosen niche.
Understanding where one can win and where one may not excel is crucial. This strategic approach ensures that efforts are concentrated on areas with the highest potential for success.
Going beyond just finding your niche, Datuk Jake highlighted the necessity for PR professionals to be constantly engaged with the world around them. This includes staying attuned to emerging trends, societal shifts and technological advancements.
By being proactive and aware of these changes, PR professionals can craft more relevant and impactful strategies. This engagement helps in anticipating challenges and opportunities, allowing for timely and effective responses.
Your Strategic Focus
Understanding the specific areas where one can excel is essential for strategic focus. Datuk Jake stressed the importance of recognising one's strengths and leveraging them effectively. This means not spreading oneself too thin but instead concentrating on areas where significant impact can be made. It involves a clear-eyed assessment of strengths and limitations and strategically positioning oneself to capitalise on opportunities.
"Don't overextend, understand your reach and play into your strengths. Your goal should always be to elevate your strengths, but also stabilise the parts where you are weakest. The last thing that PR professional needs is a niche that they are excellent in."
Datuk Jake stressed that by doing so, you will only thrive within the industry and will surely help you realise your actual abilities to push your personal boundaries.
