Moonlit Whispers
A Mooncake Festival Celebration by the BAC Performing Arts Club and BAC Chatterbox Club
Have you ever heard the story of the moon goddess Chang'e and her husband Hou Yi? This story is commonly told during the Mid-Autumn Festival (A.K.A the Mooncake Festival), which is a harvest festival celebrated in Chinese culture, and is one of their most important holidays. This festival has been celebrated for over 3000 years. Nowadays though, the Mooncake Festival is not only celebrated as a way to honour the moon, but as a way to bring people together, sharing in the prosperity and joy and promoting togetherness, gratitude, and cultural diversity.
This year, the Mid-Autumn Festival fell in the month of September, and mooncakes were abound wherever you went. Not wanting to miss out on celebrating this historical festival, Chatterbox BAC and the BAC Performing Arts Club came together to host their very first collaboration event: Moonlit Whispers! The idea of this event was to recreate the warmth and joy found at Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations on BAC Campus, giving both students and staff the opportunity to participate in its various traditions.
To start off the event, the first tradition that students got a chance to participate in was 'lantern riddles!' Lantern riddles, or "riddles written on lanterns" are commonly displayed during the Mid-Autumn Festival, containing messages of wisdom and good fortune. They're often used as a way of testing language and problem solving skills. For this event, there were four riddles displayed on lanterns, and those who answered all four riddles were eligible for a later segment: the lucky draw!
After the riddles, the emcees of the event began to tell the story of Chang'e and her husband Hou Yi. In between the story, the BAC Performing Arts Club gave performances related to the story. Some of the performances given were from BeWILD, BAC Performing Arts Club's dance crew with an impressive performance of 'Sun and Moon,' BeYOND, BAC Performing Arts Club's band, with enjoyable performances of 'Fly Me to the Moon' and '月亮代表我的心 (the moon represents my heart),' and BeLIVE, BAC Performing Arts Club's vocal group, with beautiful performances of 'Talking to the Moon,' 'My Love Mine All Mine,' and 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight.'
In between the performances, students were able to spend some time bonding with each other while trying the delectable spread of mooncakes served by the BAC Performing Arts Club and the BAC Chatterbox Club, including baked mooncakes, snow skin mooncakes and moonlight biscuits! Some of the flavours and types of mooncakes served were new to the students, giving them a chance to expand their horizons and learn more about the Mid-Autumn Festival.
After the performances and snacks, the presidents of the two clubs, Stefanie Chai and Rachel Leong took to the stage to conduct the lucky draw! There were two winners who won prizes provided by the clubs. To end the event, the organising chairs from each club gave a speech thanking everyone for coming and sharing their hopes that the students learned something about the Mooncake Festival.
