Amnesty BAC Organises an Event to Showcase Human Rights Issues in Malaysia
Amnesty BAC is a force for change, highlighting injustices and advocating for the rights of people all around the world. Some of the topics they've covered are deaths in custody, indigenous rights, women's rights, and workers rights.
With the influx of foundation students to the campus this month, Amnesty BAC decided to organise an event introducing themselves to the new students and showcasing some human rights issues happening locally. This is how 'Harmony for Humanity' was born!
Held on 1st August 2024, Harmony for Humanity included games, snacks, and several booths detailing different issues of human rights in Malaysia. The event started off with an ice-breaker: "broken telephone"! This got the participants to loosen up and be more comfortable around each other, before they proceeded to the booths.
The first booth, introduced by Hridhay Praveen, was a booth about equal rights in Malaysia. He used a game of snakes & ladders to quiz students on the current state of this issue in Malaysia and the laws in place surrounding equal rights. Upon quizzing the students, he then told them the correct answers, and the winners of the game were able to get some candy as a prize!
The next booth, introduced by Lakhen Bahadur was an interactive quiz on Quizziz, about East Malaysian rights! Participants challenged each other to be the winner, finding out the correct answers and learning more about the struggles faced by East Malaysians. Winners were able to get more candy prizes!
Last but not least, the booth by Shweta A/P Jayganathan touched on child marriages in Malaysia. The game associated with the booth was musical chairs, and every time someone was eliminated, they had to answer a question about child marriages. Shweta would then explain more about the question asked and inform them of the right answer. Just as with the other two booths, winners were able to get prizes!
At the end of the session, the committee read out the participants comments from each booth with their personal opinions on the topic of equal rights, East Malaysian rights and child marriages. It was an informative session with many students learning more about the issues presented by Amnesty BAC.
"I found the event to be truly insightful, shedding light on controversial topics that are not widely discussed publicly. They prepared many interactive games that allowed participants to learn more about human rights such as issues on child marriage and equal rights. I really appreciated that Amnesty BAC explained human rights issues in a way that was easy for us to understand," said Ong Zhi Yi.
