Family Law: Divorce Petition Workshop by ALSA BAC
Family law is a field that many law students are interested in. It is a field that requires both technical intelligence and emotional intelligence. While emotional intelligence is something that is developed with experience, technical experience in the area of family law is something that any aspiring lawyer in the field needs to learn. One of the areas of family law that students need to learn about is drafting a divorce petition. This is what ALSA BAC aimed to do with their event "Family Law: Drafting a Divorce Petition."
The event started off with a welcome of everyone for the event, and an introduction of the speakers and judges, Ms. Alicia Nicholson from Messrs. Alicia Nicholson and Ms. Agalya J Munusamy from Messrs. MahWengKwai. Once everyone was acquainted with the speakers, the event kicked off.
Starting off the workshop was Ms. Agalya. She shared everything there is to know about divorce proceedings, and the ins and outs of drafting a divorce petition. The participants asked numerous questions and clarifications to better understand what goes into a divorce petition and how it can be as effective as possible, such as the costs associated with filing a divorce petition, how one can determine custody of children and the most common issues that arise with filing divorce petitions.
After lunch, the workshop continued with Ms. Alicia's session. She started off by giving the students sticky notes and getting them to write down their purpose of attending the event and what they wish to take away from it. Some of the things written by the students were about wanting to understand family law, learning how divorce works and the procedure of divorce. She addressed these items written on the sticky notes, and then continued on by showing some examples of divorce petitions, explaining the details of each one and the drafting needed to create a good divorce petition.
Once Ms. Alicia's session was done, participants were split into pairs, where they were given 1 hour and 15 minutes to draft their own divorce petition based on whatever Ms. Agalya and Ms. Alicia taught them in their sessions. This part of the workshop had a twist–this was a competition! Once the 1 hour and 15 minutes were over, the speakers reviewed and graded each pair's petition and gave feedback accordingly.
After the results were tallied, the participants were gathered once again to announce the winners:
- 2nd Runner-Up: Lee Yen Yi and Nicole Seng
- 1st Runner-Up: Yap Tze Yee and Lee Jia Vern
- Champion: Thenaesh A/L Subramaniam, Kristen Sapphire Yoon and Yeo Hay
Congratulations to all the winners of the event! It was an enlightening one, not just for the winners, but for the participants, who learned something new that complements their studies, especially if they have an interest in pursuing family law in the future.
