Chinese Debate Club's Exhibition

The Chinese Debate Club is a good place for students who love to voice out their opinions and learn the art of public speaking in Mandarin. Over the years, they have entered Chinese debate competitions, organised their own competitions and showcased their skills to the student body of BAC. This time, to introduce themselves to the new students of the September intake, the BAC Chinese Debate Club had their very first Debate Exhibition of their tenure!

As students gathered into the classroom, eager to see what debate is all about, they got a chance to network with the committee and learn new things from them. The event finally kicked off with an official introduction from president Amanda Kah, who shared the purpose and the idea behind this event, and invited the students to join the Chinese Debate Club for more fun activities like this one.

Before the debate began, the topic was introduced: "if there was a magic potion that could eliminate your sadness, would you drink it?" Students got a chance to vote on the topic via slido, where a majority stated they wouldn't drink it. Arguing for the motion were Jarrell and Sydney, and arguing against the motion were Amanda and Xiang Yi.

Jarrell and Sydney argued that without sadness, you would be able to feel more positive emotions and appreciate life, because life is short and we don't need sadness to drag us down. They also argued that without sadness, one can be more objective and clear-headed, stating that you can learn lessons from any emotion even without sadness.

Amanda and Xiang Yi argued that if you do drink the potion, the sad experiences we face in life where we grow become meaningless because you no longer feel the sadness from them. If you eliminate the emotion from those memories, you may make the same mistake again. They also argued that if you eliminate sadness, you will feel the loss of the emotion and feel hollow.

The debate started off with a prepared speech from the first speakers from each side. The next section of the debate was a back-and-forth argument between Amanda and Jarrell, where they countered each other's points and rebutted previous arguments. After that, the second speakers shared their prepared speeches, showcasing the main idea of the debate and why each audience member should vote for their side. To end the debate, all four debaters had a chance to share in the second back-and-forth argument. They rebutted each others' points and tried to prove the validity of their arguments.

In the end, students were asked to vote on the topic again, and depending on how much change there was since the first vote, the side who managed to convince the most people would win. And the winners were... Sydney and Jarrell!

This was definitely an informative, enjoyable and interesting event, truly showcasing what the Chinese Debate Club is all about. But this is not the end for them, stay tuned and keep an eye out as they organise more events to showcase their skills to the student body of BAC Education.
