
The BAC Law Society had the distinct pleasure of hosting a thought-provoking panel discussion titled Behind the Beats: The Legal Framework of Music on 22nd January at the BAC PJ campus.
This session delved deep into the often-overlooked intersection of law and music, shedding light on crucial topics like royalties, copyright infringement, and music licensing, all within the context of the Malaysian music industry which was warmly addressed in the welcoming note by Mr Raja Singham, Chief Future Officer of BAC Education Group.
It was an exciting opportunity for students, artists, and industry professionals alike to engage with experts on how legal frameworks shape the future of music creation, distribution, and protection.

Dato’ Khatijah Ibrahim
A true icon in the Malaysian arts scene, Dato' Khatijah has mesmerised audiences with her powerful voice and decades-long career as a singer and actress since the 1980s. Her contribution to the music industry is nothing short of legendary.
Mr. Zam Razak
An alumnus of Berklee College of Music and a talented musician, Mr. Zam has performed alongside the biggest names in rock, including Metallica and Guns N’ Roses. His insights bring both practical experience and academic expertise to the table.
Mr. Keshminder Singh
Legal Manager at Public Performance Malaysia (PPM), Mr. Keshminder is at the forefront of Malaysia’s music rights enforcement. He focuses on copyright law and intellectual property rights, ensuring that music creators receive fair compensation.
Mr. Shan Selvadurai
The founder of Westwind Productions & Consulting, Mr. Shan has over 30 years of experience in artist and event management. His innovative approach to event production and artist branding has made him a respected name in the industry.
The Forum
Mr. Keshminder Singh shared the pivotal role of PPM in protecting artists' rights. He highlighted how the organisation works alongside the Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM) and other non-profit agencies to tackle the growing issue of digital copyright violations.
The powerful takeaway from the discussion was the importance of synchronization rights. Mr. Shan Selvadurai emphasized, it is crucial that users—whether they are filmmakers, advertisers, or anyone in need of music—obtain proper permission before using copyrighted material.
Behind the Beats is a resounding success, from Dato’ Khatijah Ibrahim and Mr. Zam Razak’s incredible performances to the invaluable insights shared by Mr. Keshminder Singh and Mr. Shan Selvadurai, with the guest students from UM Law Society. This event was truly one for the book.
