BAC Mooting Society's Moot Simulation Experience
In the month of August, BAC opened its doors to prospective students for Open Day. In conjunction with Open Day, the BAC Mooting Society showcased their talent for all to see by hosting their very own moot simulation!
Planning the simulation were President Charlotte Goh and Vice President Kho Che Ian. Together, Charlotte and Ian prepared a script, recruited mooters and judges, and planned out the entire simulation down to a T. Some of the students recruited for the simulation were experienced mooters Kelly Ngai and Charlotte Chong, former committee member Colette Lee and future mooters Summer Liew and Karen Navaratnam.
To further attract interest for mooting, current students were also invited to watch the moot simulation, learning about the fundamentals of mooting and what it looks like. These students would then have the chance to learn more about the mooting club and what they do.
The moot problem used in this simulation was the one created for NOVAL 2023: a problem about a mother who left her child alone at home with rotten cherries. The difference between a regular round of mooting and this simulation however, was the existence of a narrator. Karen, as the narrator, stepped in every now and then to provide explanations on the terminology used during the moot as well as how mooters should proceed when faced with different challenges throughout the round.
After the round, students took their time to ask the mooters some questions and learn from them. They had an interesting dialogue, with the experienced mooters sharing their thoughts and knowledge with the students. The hope for this event is that it would encourage new students to try their hand at mooting, an experience which would add to their education at BAC.
Here's what some of the BAC Mooting Society team had to say about the event:
"Planning the moot simulation was very smooth and not stressful, thanks to the experience I gained during the previous tenure. Although our manpower was not as expected, our dedicated EXCO team and the PO came together to overcome these challenges, resulting in a successful and smooth outcome," said Ian, the Vice President.
"The moot simulation went smoothly since everyone knew their roles well. I was glad to hear from both the novice mooters as well as the FIL participants that they enjoyed the experience and were interested to start their mooting journeys in the upcoming competitions. With regard to sharing my experience with the new students, I think it was vital on all of experienced mooters’ part given that moot will seem intimidating to inexperienced students no matter how much they are interested in it. Unlike debate, most pre-LLB students will not have much exposure to moot so it’s both reassuring and encouraging for me to break the barrier for the new students, helping them view mooting as an accessible legal extracurricular, and ease some of their concerns," said Charlotte Chong, who acted as a judge in the simulation.
