BAC Law Society Visits Parliament
Every year, the BAC Law Society hosts a visit to Parliament so that students are able to learn about the lawmaking process and see it firsthand. This year was no different. However, wanting to bridge the gap between textbook and experience for more students, the BAC Law Society organised two trips to Parliament this year!
More than 40 students on each day entered the Parliament building, ready to learn. On day 1, students were given a tour of the Parliament building by Parliament Officer Ms. Emilda Binti Md Yusop. She showed the students different aspects of the building such as the boards on which the names of the Members of Parliament are carved, the painted portraits of the Prime Ministers and the Speakers of the House as well as the place where Parliament used to hold all their press conferences.
After the tour, Ms. Emilda brought the students into the Dewan Rakyat to sit in an ongoing session of Parliament. It was interesting and informative for the students to be able to see firsthand how the Members of Parliament debate certain topics and how they work together in order for Bills to have all the information they need.
After the students left the Parliament building, they were brought to meet YB Howard Lee, who shared about his experience as a Member of Parliament and how he ended up in politics in the first place. Students chimed in with questions of their own, wanting to know more about his experience and what it takes to be in politics.
On day 2, before entering the building, the students had a chance to speak to YB Zambry Abdul Kadir, the Minister of Higher Education, who gave them a few words of wisdom. This time, they were showed around by Parliament Officer Ms. Normaizatul Anis Binti Jamalluddin. Ms. Anis brought the students into the Dewan Negara, where she quizzed the students on the differences between the Dewan Rakyat and the Dewan Negara, and the functions of both houses.
Students on day 2 also got a chance to sit in an ongoing session of Parliament, learning about how the Members of Parliament debate on issues and Bills to be passed, just as the students of day 1 did. After the Parliament session, they met YB Howard Lee, who spoke to the students about lawmaking and the intricacies of politics.
Both days, students got a chance to learn new things about the process of lawmaking and the ins and outs of what happens in the Parliament building. Here's what some of the students had to say:
"Visiting Parliament in real time was such an experience! The day was planned great, kudos to BAC Law Society! I couldn't ask for more, I just wish we could have sat in the Parliamentary session a bit longer," said Sruthika.
"I enjoyed the trip so much, it was an amazing memory for me as I never imagined that I could be in the Parliament that I used to just see on TV. I learned a lot, looking forward to future trips planned by BAC Law Society," said Ray.
"It was really fun and informative especially since I went with my friends. It was informative when Mr. Howard spoke to us and told us more about the political world," said Karen.
"The trip was insightful and an eye opener. I got to see the 2 houses of Parliament in person, see the MP's debate and personally meet YB Howard Lee. I enjoyed the time there and learned a lot," said Lin Ni.
It was indeed a beneficial trip, but the efforts of the Law Society didn't stop there! They visited the Palace of Justice, and will soon visit several law firms in the coming month!
