BAC Law Society Visits Palace of Justice

One of BAC Law Society's annual events is a visit to the Palace of Justice. Each year, a group of students will be brought to Putrajaya to learn about the different aspects of court. This year, BAC Law Society received such a high demand for the court visit that they decided to have two visits. The demand was so high, that registration for both days reached the maximum capacity, which was 40 students per day, and this was accomplished in just two hours!

On both days, students first went into the court of appeal, where they were given a briefing on the ins and outs of the courtroom, and the judiciary system in Malaysia. They also got to hear from interns to the Chief Justice about what working at the Palace of Justice was like.

They were then quizzed on different things mentioned in the briefing, with prizes given to those who could answer the questions. This year, students were lucky enough to be able to witness court proceedings in person! They got to see how lawyers and judges conduct themselves in the courtroom, how they argue their cases, and what kind of legal precedent is used to decide on a verdict.

After they left the courtroom, students had a chance to visit the Judicial Museum, where they got to see the entire history of Malaysia's judiciary system, all the way from the Malacca Sultanate till today. Some of the items in the museum included the official robes of a judge, ledgers from past courtrooms, a mannequin reenactment of a courtroom from back when Malaysia still practiced jury trials and information about different courts in Malaysia.

They also had a chance to visit the library of the Palace of Justice, where they got to see what books and case studies are referenced by lawyers when they come to the Palace of Justice. They also learned that the library is in the process of digitising their books to ensure that records can be kept even if the physical books are too old to survive.

This visit was definitely a beneficial one for the students, as they got to bridge the gap between their textbooks and the practical work they will be doing once they graduate. Being able to witness the court proceedings gave them an idea of the different areas they can pursue within litigation itself. Here's what some of them had to say:

"Visiting the Palace of Justice was an awe-inspiring experience and being able to witness the workings of the court in real time left a lasting impression on me. It is a privilege to explore such a prestigious and important institution that deepened my appreciation for law and the judiciary system," said Rachel Leong.

"I learnt a lot in Palace of Justice, touring the Court of Appeal and observing the judicial process in action. The experience provided me with valuable insights into the legal system and the roles of various court officials," said Foo Kai Cheong.

"It was a very unique experience indeed. We got to hear firsthand from the staff about their experience of working for the judiciary office. One of the best parts was when we were able to sit in for an active court proceeding at the Court of Appeal level. Truly an inspiring visit to the Palace of Justice!" said Haw Ven Zherng.
