BAC Career Club x BAC Law Society

A Day at Rahmat Lim & Partners

Have you ever wondered what your future would look like after law school? Curious about what the working life of a lawyer would look like? BAC Law Society and BAC Career Club decided to work together to bridge that gap between students and their future working life by organising a trip to Rahmat Lim & Partners!

Rahmat Lim & Partners is one of the largest corporate law firms in Malaysia, handling a wide range of domestic and cross-border matters, including some of the most significant and complex transactions involving Malaysia. They've gotten top rankings in notable legal directories and publications in major practice areas, and have received numerous awards in the industry. This firm also happens to be home to BAC's own EU Law lecturer, Mr. Pua Seng Yik!

The visit to RLP started in the boardroom, where students sat to hear from partners Mr. Pua, Mr. Rashid and Ms. Florence. The three lawyers spoke on what RLP does as a firm and how they operate. They also shared about what the working life of a lawyer at RLP is like and how they balance work with hobbies. Ms. Florence also shared on the team-building activities organised by the firm, such as weekly badminton sessions, pickleball sessions and firm trips overseas.

After the partners had shared their piece, students heard from pupils and associates about their experience. They were also joined by a partner, Ms. Chiew Ee. They touched on their experiences as pupils and what it was like being promoted to associate. They spoke on their work and how interns and pupils have a chance to do meaningful work in a firm like RLP. From there, students chimed in with their own questions for the partners, associates and pupils, wanting to hear about what their future could look like.

After the panel discussion, students were brought around the firm to get a glimpse of the working area. Ms. Florence and Mr. Pua highlighted the art on the walls of the firm, belonging to the lawyers. They also explained the layout of the office, with partners and associates sitting close by each other for ease of communication.

Once the tour was over, students had the opportunity to network with the lawyers of the firm, learning in-depth from them about their career pathways and their life as a lawyer in a big firm like RLP.

It was definitely a necessary opportunity for the students and members of BAC Law Society and BAC Career Club, as they learned from their predecessors who have since left law school and entered the working world. Here's what some of the students had to say about the visit:

"Visiting this firm has greatly expanded my knowledge of the legal industry. We were warmly welcomed by the partners, friendly lawyers, and helpful pupils. They provided an insightful look into the daily operations of RLP, which differed significantly from my expectations. The team was very supportive and eager to address our questions and offer assistance. The firm fosters a collaborative environment where growth is encouraged regardless of seniority. This inclusive atmosphere was evident in my discussions with both senior and junior lawyers!" said Lee Ying Ernn, Vice President of the BAC Career Club.

"The RLP law firm visit was an invaluable experience. It provided deep insight into the practical application of legal principle and highlighted the importance of ethics. The lawyers are willing to share their knowledge made the visit both informative and inspiring," said Christ Loo.
