BAC Career Club Visits Lavania & Balan Chambers
From Clasroom to Courtroom with BAC Career Club
One of BAC Career Club's regular activities are visits to different law firms! Some of the firms they have visited are Zul Rafique & Partners, Low & Partners, Thomas Phillip, Rahmat Lim & Partners, and they've even visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (You can click the linked text to read more about each visit)!
Recently, they paid a trip to Lavania & Balan Chambers, a boutique dispute resolution law firm, that offers legal services in different areas, focusing on company and construction law. When they arrived at the firm, they were greeted by Mr. Mavin Thillainathan and Mr. Balan Nair Thamodaran, partners at the firm.
The session started off with a brief talk by Cheryl Ng, an intern at the firm who was set to end her internship on that day. She shared about her experience interning at the firm and what she had learned throughout her internship. She highly encouraged students to intern at Lavania & Balan as they could learn a lot from the experiences and responsibilities given to them at a boutique law firm.
Next to share her experience was Ms. Afiqah Aina, an associate who had just been called to the Bar! She shared about her nine month pupillage experience at Lavania & Balan Chambers, explaining the learning curve between interns, pupils and associates. After that, senior associate Mr. Reuben Joseph shared about his experience within the firm, educating the students on construction law and the disputes that the firm handles. Last to speak was Mr. Balan himself, sharing his experience on running the firm, and the challenges he faced throughout his time practicing law.
After that, students chimed in with their own questions, asking about construction law, cases handled by the firm and internship opportunities. Mr. Mavin and Mr. Balan graciously answered all the questions, encouraging an open dialogue among the lawyers and the students.
Once the session ended, Mr. Mavin invited the students to dine on some snacks provided by the firm and network with the lawyers. Students got a chance to speak to the lawyers, pupils and interns personally about their experience, gaining insights into their own future.
It indeed was a beneficial and fruitful experience for the students, allowing them to network and gain contacts to reach their future.
