ALSA Visits Bar Council Malaysia
The months of July and August have seen many clubs step out of campus to learn more about what life after law school can look like for them. These clubs have visited Parliament, the Palace of Justice, several law firms, and most recently, ALSA BAC visited the Bar Council of Malaysia!
The Malaysian Bar is an organisation in which every practicing lawyer in Malaysia sits, upholding the rule of law and protecting the legal interest of the citizens of Malaysia. The Bar Council consists of 42 members of the Bar that are elected annually to manage the affairs of the Malaysian Bar.
This visit started off with a talk from officers Tariq Imran and Subash Devaraj (who happens to be the mooting coach that led BAC's 2023 Jessup team to victory!) about the function of the Bar Council and the activities they have participated in since the pandemic ended. Mr. Tariq spoke on the demonstrations and protests that some of the officers have participated in, and Mr. Subash shared about the newly implemented internship opportunities that the students could apply for at the Bar Council.
Many of the students were interested in the internship opportunity and took the time to ask Mr. Subash numerous questions to gain more information about it. The talk with the two officers was definitely a beneficial one for the students as they learned about an alternative path they could take with their law degree besides working in a law firm.
After the talk, students were taken for a tour around the Bar Council facilities, starting with the Malaysian International Arbitration Center, where they learned about the Bar Council's role in arbitration and how the organisation functions. They then had a chance to visit the extensive library of the Bar Council.
After the tour, students went back to the hall to hear a talk from the Bar Council Constitutional Law Committee about the Constitution. First off, chairperson Andrew Khoo addressed the students and explained to them the importance of the Constitution and what it represents in our country. To encourage interactivity, officer Joshua Wu gave the students a quiz about the constitution. He promptly explained the answers after each question, giving students some in-depth knowledge about the Constitution. It was definitely an interesting way for them to learn.
Here are what some of the students had to say about the visit:
"I had never visited the Bar Council before and was pleasantly surprised to learn about the diverse internship opportunities they offer, amongst other things. The experience was incredibly informative, and the staff's engaging approach (especially the mini quiz on constitutional law) made the visit even more enjoyable!" said Yuveneshwari Sugumaran.
“This Bar Council visit enlightened me about another side of the legal industry! I learned the mechanisms that keep the legal profession running smoothly. I would like to thank ALSA BAC for bringing this opportunity to me,” said Sharmily Honey.
