Launch of PRactitioners & 2024 WPRD Conference
World Public Relations Day (WPRD), celebrated on July 16th, is a special day dedicated to honouring the incredible impact of PR professionals worldwide. It's a day to recognise those who shape stories, build trust, and connect organisations with their audiences. This day highlights the importance of ethical practices, strategic communication, and the positive impact that effective PR can have on businesses and communities around the globe. It serves as an opportunity for PR practitioners to reflect on their contributions, share knowledge, and inspire future generations in the field.
This day also marked a significant milestone for Malaysia's PR industry with the official launch of the Public Relations Practitioners Society of Malaysia (PRactitioners) and a groundbreaking collaboration between IACT College and PRactitioners. The launch, then paved the way for the 2024 WPRD Conference: The Future of Public Relations in a Changing World. The event, held at the Omnia Auditorium in Menara BAC, was virtually launched by the Minister of Communications, YB Fahmi Fadzil, and is the first of its kind in Malaysia in this millennium.
The launch which was sponsored by CARMA, a leading media intelligence provider, and Perbadanan Nasional Berhad (Pernas), was also supported by IACT College, along with regional PR bodies. This was also the impressive work of the final-year Diploma in Mass Communication students from the Public Relations Campaign and Strategy class, who played a key role in co-organising the launch and conference.
Emcees for the event first invited Timothy Chan (CEO of IACT College and Academic Bureau Chief for PRactitioners) to deliver his welcome address.
Timothy stressed that the partnership between IACT College and PRactitioners was not only crucial for students, but for Malaysia’s communication landscape as a whole, and that the collaboration invests in the future by equipping students with essential skills for the dynamic media environment. Timothy also shared his enthusiasm for the occasion, highlighting the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement between IACT College and PRactitioners.
Nordin Abdullah, the Managing Director of Glenreagh Sdn Bhd, then took to the stage, to address the room. He shared his insights and enthusiasm about the WPRD Conference, highlighting its significance in advancing industry standards and fostering collaboration among professionals. He also emphasised the importance of the conference in shaping the future of PR and encouraged attendees to fully engage with the opportunities it presents. Nordin then introduced

Datuk P. Kamalanathan, Founder and Chairman of PRactitioners, in his speech said, "We’re moving beyond traditional roles to become architects of trust and reputation, adapting to digitalisation, AI, and sustainability. PRactitioners is setting new benchmarks with specialised bureaus: Academic, Editorial, and Digital Communication."
He also proudly introduced esteemed mentors of PRactitioners, including Puan Sri Siew Yong Gnanalingam (Managing Director, Ayur Centre Sdn Bhd), Datuk Yong Soo Heong (President, Malaysian Press Institute and Ex Bernama CEO & Editor-in-Chief), Datuk Rocky Bru (Founder & Advisor, Bru Publications) and Raja Singham (Managing Director and Chief Future Officer, BAC Education) among others. Datuk Kamalanathan also expressed his excitement to partner with the World Public Relations Day Secretariat for the WPRD Celebrations.
The event continued with YAM Tengku Panglima Besar Tan Sri Azlan ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Abu Bakar taking the stage to deliver his speech. In his address, Tan Sri Azlan shared insightful perspectives on the significance of the event and its impact on the industry. His speech highlighted key themes and offered valuable guidance, reflecting his deep understanding and commitment to the subject.
In his recorded keynote address, YB Fahmi Fadzil remarked that the launch of PRactitioners underscores Malaysia's PR industry's maturity and ambition, and it closely aligns with our government's vision for a more transparent, responsive, and engaged Malaysia. He also emphasised the vital role of PR in projecting Malaysia’s leadership in the region, as Malaysia prepares to take on the ASEAN chairmanship next year.
He then officially launched PRactitioners and the 2024 World PR Day Conference.
The high-tech launch of PRactitioners, featuring an innovative use of palm technology, was an electrifying event. The atmosphere was charged with high-beat music and enthusiastic applause, creating an immersive experience that highlighted the forward-thinking nature of the initiative. The dynamic presentation left the audience exhilarated and eager for what’s next.
The momentous signing of a Memorandum of Agreement between PRactitioners and IACT College then took place.
