BAC student emerges Champion of English Speaking Union (ESU) of Malaysia’s Public Speaking Competition 2019

KUALA LUMPUR, 22 APRIL 2019 – Imelda Sandrasagaran, BAC’s first year law student under the UK Transfer Degree Programme, was announced the winner of the ESU Malaysia Public Speaking Competition 2019 held at Taylor’s College Lakeside Campus, Subang Jaya. Twelve finalists delivered their speeches on the national theme “Nature is a Common Language”.

Imelda emerged as champion given her self-confidence and winning speech based on the title “We Will Live Forever, They Said”. Despite a torn ligament and walking to the stage on crutches, Imelda persevered by displaying great eloquence in delivering her speech and answers to questions by the jury members.

Apart from a cash prize of RM1,500, Imelda walked away with an all-expense paid trip to represent Malaysia in London for the ESU International Finals from the 13th to 17th May 2019, sponsored by ESU Malaysia.

“I will improve my skill, speech, style and language in preparation for the London event”, Imelda told The Star.

ESU Malaysia Chairman and chief judge of the competition, Tunku Dara Tunku Tan Sri Naquiah Almarhum Tuanku Jaafar handed over prizes to the winners.

The competition held annually by the English Speaking Union (ESU) of Malaysia in collaboration with the Malaysia Institute of Debating and Public Speaking (MIDP) and Taylors College, Malaysia, is open to all Malaysians aged 16 to 20. The International Champion will win a trip to participate in the Feb 2020 Winter Youth Assembly at the United Nations in New York.
