Walk or Run for their Lives: The BAC-Challenges ‘Buddy Day’ 2015

Brickfields Asia College (BAC) in collaboration with Challenges Media is proud to present the inaugural Buddy Day event held in conjunction with International Friendship Day on August 2nd, 2015 at the Dataran DBKL, Kuala Lumpur. Using music and movement, the BAC – Challenges Buddy Day 2015 will be an inclusive day out in Kuala Lumpur, bringing together the public and members of the special needs community.

Events planned for the day include a 3km Buddy Day Fun Walk, a 7km Buddy Run and a Buddy Carnival. The Buddy Run will be flagged off at 8am with the Buddy walk commencing at 8.05am. The carnival will be held from 9amto about 1pm with music, puppet shows, fun games and lemang & dodol making amongst many other activities.

At a press conference held recently, BAC’s Managing Director Raja Singham said that this event is part of the BAC Gives Back banner which organizes various education-based initiatives to positively impact the lives of countless Malaysians. “In Malaysia, there is a tendency to segregate those with special needs from the rest of the community with further segregation within the special needs community itself. We, at BAC and Challenges Media, believe that this should not be the case. We advocate equality, inclusivity and integration. The theme of this event is using friendship to cement the relationship between society and the special needs community and emphasizing the importance of an open and flexible society where people can interact with one another irrespective of disability or disadvantage.”

Mary Chen, Director of Challenges Media, said “We are delighted to work with BAC and we hope to make this an annual event bringing friendship into the lives of the disabled who are often lonely. We hope that this event will bring mainstream students and special needs children to work together, help each other and grow together as Malaysians.”

The event is designed to create awareness about diversity in the wider community, create common activities for people with and without disabilities, celebrate UN International Friendship Day and create a sustainable annual event for Challenge’s Buddy Programme that focuses on social inclusion.
